As a computer programmer I have been working with programs, applications, and websites for decades. I have been a full-time programmer since the mid-1990s. The vast majority of programs, including websites and apps, use data in some way. The programs are used to store, retrieve, manipulate, amalgamate or separate, and present data. What are genealogical record collections? Databases. When you put your name, date and location of birth, your parents information, etc. into a family tree, you are putting data into a database.
We are currently working on another collection that is property of the Somerset & Dorset Family History Society, their Photography Project. In the past, we have mentioned a few of the collections for which we have provided search facilities. This particular collection contains all the data on the photograph or object. The only thing not available is the image itself. That can be provided by the Society, of course.
When building the search tool we want to make searching as simple as possible, but still offer as many search options as we can. In the case of the collections with the Society most search forms provide the most pertinent data columns to search by. But those that are not provided in the form are often provided in the results. The way the results are presented is important too. We provide the data in a table that is paginated so there isn’t too much data on one screen. The results are also sortable usually by each field. But the results table data is also searchable. So you can do a broader search from the form and then narrow your results. It is quick, simple, and efficient.
Decades of experience working with data and building programs to present and manipulate it. We offer our skills and expertise to the SDFHS and we also make them available to you. Quick, efficient, secure so you can share your data and you can definitely benefit by the sharing of others.
