Beginning Your Genealogy Journey

The Beginning - Get Started With Your Genealogy

You have decided to start working on your family's genealogy but where do you start? There are so many websites that you can use to start putting in your family tree. Gone are the days of just using paper to keep track. Many may still have a family Bible they put information in, but once again, that's not very easy to share. And what happens if, heaven forbid, it is lost? In all honesty, you can have one website where you put all the information and even share it, but you should and can utilize all of them for research.

Gone are the days of just using paper

Each site can have different information. If you stick to one site for all research you could be missing out on those important pieces you just cannot seem to find. Why is this? Because record collections vary by provider. Also everyone has their preference of genealogical sites they find easiest to use. While Ancestry has the biggest name recognition and many more records than some others, some people get overwhelmed with the sheer volume of information that can come up. You may be on record 50 of marriage licenses wondering where your great grandparents' information is and how you only have 200 more to go. Yet, over at Family Search your 2nd cousin twice removed has put it on his tree. One quick search and you have your information.

The family Bible can be great resource.

Find what works best for your needs

In the end, you need to find what works best for your needs. Go through, look at them all, do test runs, see which one may be your main site, but don’t forget to take advantage of the wealth of knowledge that is out there. As genealogy becomes more and more popular, and as more and more records become available, your search will become even easier.
